About Our Name
Chutney Mary's Name
As a lover of fine Indian food here's a little story about our name.
Legend has it that Queen Mary, the English Queen of India was quite a character! She loved the Indian culture and its people and in particular her long serving Indian man servant.
She would often take walks near her palace with her man servant. On her walks she would wear her beautiful English clothes complete with hat and parasol.
Many of the wealthy Indian women started to imitate her fashionable look complete with very bright fabrics and intense red lipstick!
These Indian women become known as Chutney Marys and they were thought of as quite shocking at the time!
So that's the way the story goes...
